There’s a new book of photographs of breast cancer survivors called Breast Stories. The photographer, Phil Carpenter, told his story to the Calgary Herald:
The project came to him. It began in 2006, when Deborah Parkes, at the time a Gazette reporter, confided to Carpenter that she was about to undergo a second mastectomy.
She wanted to know whether he’d be willing to photograph her before and after the surgery.
“I was surprised she trusted me enough. I was also surprised this was happening to someone I knew. I’d never known anyone who’d had a mastectomy,” Carpenter recalled.
